An Historic night - Redcar Athletic's first floodlit match at Green Lane

Finally, after a years painstaking work littered with setbacks, Redcar Athletic FC are set to embark on an historic night for the town of Redcar with the first floodlit football game to take place in the town.

Redcar Athletic will take on current Wearside League Leaders Stockton Town on Tuesday 26th February 2013 in what will be an enthralling passionate derby game between the two sides.

Kick off is 7.30pm at Green Lane, Redcar, Yorkshire, TS10 4NF.

Athletic have switched the game from its usual Wednesday night slot to avoid a clash with the big FA Cup game Boro v Chelsea in in the hope that this will draw a big crowd for the game.

The club would like to publically thank several people for the hard work and long hours they put in to ensure that the floodlights were ready they include Paul Wilson, John Neesam, Ian Best ,Chris Dryden, Vince Peel, Wayne Burkill and Manager Nicky Ward.

Entry for the game on Tuesday is £2 adults £1 concessions a programme will be available at £1 and snacks and hot/cold drinks will be available.

The club will now try and embark on attempting to provide covered standing and seating accomodation at the ground. This would ensure that the set up meets Northern League approval. However, funds are now strictly limited and the club is appealing to anybody out there individuals, sponsors, companies to come forward and offer their support.

We can offer several packages so anybody with football in Redcar in their hearts please get in touch we would be delighted to hear from you. The last 12 months have been very difficult and frustrating for the club. But with financial support a keen and enthusiastic bunch of volunteers, plus an ambitious committee, we can eventually put football in Redcar on the map.

The club are hoping Redcar residents will turn out on Tuesday night to enjoy the football and support our local team

10-man Redcar Athletic beat Jarrow at Green Lane with a late strike

Posted by Chris:

My Grandson Daniel and I went along to a windy Green Lane today to watch local Wearside League team Redcar Athletic FC in action against fellow high flyers Jarrow FC.

Redcar Athletic started the match joint top of the League on 13 points along with today's opponents Jarrow FC and Darlington Cleveland Bridge FC. Promotion from the Wearside League would take Redcar into the Northern League. Redcar needs a successful team playing in a decent league and everyone connected with Redcar Athletic is trying to achieve this.

What they lack is local support and many local football fans are missing out on a good level of exciting football for only two quid adults - 50p juniors and concessions. Daniel and I go when we can - we also follow Leeds United.

Current attendances at home matches appear to be around 30 to 40 and I think we can do much better than that in Redcar. Check out the club's website for the next home match and come along. The club provide reasonably priced hot pies, chips and things as well as hot drinks. There is a matchday programme, containing match reports and fixtures, price £1. Also on sale are good quality scarfes, in the club's colours of red and blue, for only £6 and a lapel badge for around £2.

Redcar went down to ten men early in the first half, having just taken the lead, but there was still plenty of action in the Jarrow goal mouth with Redcar on top for much of the game. Jarrow equalised late in the second half but a late strike by Redcar gave 'the reds' all three points.

One annoying thing about these matches is having to put up with the foul mouthed shouts of the players. Which makes a change from the fans at Elland Road and the Riverside I suppose. One of the worst offenders was Jarrow's captain and number 5 who appeared to get himself booked in the second half for using foul language at the referee. He is pictured below slumped on the ground ffing and blinding at his fellow defenders, straight after Redcar's winning goal.

Redcar Athletic 2 - 1 Jarrow.

Redcar Athletic FC - putting our town on the football map

We were invited to a football match yesterday evening!

Teesside Athletic has had a senior team in the Wearside League for three or four seasons now, coming third last season and just missing out on promotion to the Northern League.

This ambitious club, who will soon be erecting stands and floodlights at its tidy Green Lane ground, has changed its name to Redcar Athletic. We have campaigned for a long time to have a senior team playing at a decent level with Redcar as its name.

We were delighted when we heard this news and pleased to receive an invite as guests to the club's first home league match, under the new name, against Silksworth.

Charlotte and Daniel came with us. Daniel, aged six, is a Leeds United regular and knows all the songs, so it came as a bit of a shock to the Redcar players when he started chanting Redcarrr, Redcarrr as they walked passed him on to the pitch. It shocked spectators even more when Redcar scored and Daniel started shouting "It's the goalie's fault 1-0" over and over again. Redcar had the ball in the net a further twice but these were disallowed. A late goal by the visitors meant the points were shared.

We had a nice snack at half time and we were really impressed with the set up.

At only £2 entrance for adults it is not costly supporting Redcar Athletic. When time permits and it does not clash with a Leeds match, then Chris and Daniel will be down at Green Lane to support "The Reds."

Many thanks to all at the club for making us so welcome.
